FoodTents Wrap Up 2009

   07 January 2010 | Number of Views: 1304

FoodTents has come a long way this year. In the midst of a global recession and increasing issues of food insecurity, FoodTents has managed to strive on thanks to your valued support. With a target of 20 FoodTents implemented in 2009, we have had a roaring success in that we have doubled this figure! 41 FoodTents were built this year enabling us to directly impact on the lives of approximately 2050 people.

One of the greatest privileges of working in the space of social entrepreneurship is the opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life. Despite differences in socioeconomic status, position or place of work, a greater sense of cohesion and unity is arising between the non-governmental organisations, private and government sectors as we strive to transform South Africa into a nation that we are all proud of. Little by little people are realising the value of partnerships and we are thankful to all of those who have come beside us this year in making our dream into a reality.

In 2009, FoodTents has been able to stretch its reach into Durban for the first time and further into Johannesburg and Cape Town. Not only did corporate South Africa respond really positively to FoodTents but we had the honour of implementing a FoodTent alongside HSH Prince Maximillian of the Princely House of Lichtenstein on his visit to South Africa.

The champions in the community are really those whose every action is one of selflessness and upliftment of his / her fellow man. There are great lessons to be learned from those who appear to be less fortunate than ourselves. “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world?” Anne Frank. The FoodTents team has been very fortunate in having the opportunity to partner with such people. It has been inspiring to see the rewards that they have reaped through their continual commitment and dedication to the FoodTents project.

We look forward to an even better year in 2010 and hope that you will come alongside us in making a difference where it matters most!

FoodTents is one of the social enterprises run by heart. It exists to address the food insecurity crisis by supplying those most in need with an easy way to grow their own veggies. A FoodTent is a makeshift greenhouse that is 2m high, 4m wide and 9m long. It makes use of an adapted hydroponics methodology to enable people to provide fresh veggies for themselves on a continual basis.
