FoodTents – the gift of life

   14 July 2009 | Number of Views: 1421

Food Tents are proving to be extremely popular as a solution to the lack of food security in South Africa. In the first semester our team erected 18 food tents at various schools, hospitals and NGO’s around the country with a direct social impact of 1440 people and indirect impact of 5760 people.

Food Tents offer a sustainable, cost-effective, low maintenance solution to provide those most in need with fresh vegetables on an ongoing basis. A Food Tent is like a big tent made of shade cloth. This revolutionary, make-shift greenhouse increases the production of fruit and vegetables significantly, feeding approximate 80 people per month.

An additional 14 food tents are scheduled for the next three months. If you would like to help in any way, please click here for more information.

FoodTents is one of the social enterprises run by heart. It exists to address the food insecurity crisis by supplying those most in need with an easy way to grow their own veggies. A FoodTent is a makeshift greenhouse that is 2m high, 4m wide and 9m long. It makes use of an adapted hydroponics methodology to enable people to provide fresh veggies for themselves on a continual basis.
