Crossroads Distribution has donated R1million to fund bursaries for post-graduate students in logistics and transportation at the University of South Africa (Unisa).
“At Crossroads Distribution we realise that the skills shortage facing the logistics and transport sector of the South African job market is proving to be a serious obstacle on the path to economic growth and development,” said Crossroads Distribution group marketing director Nicholas Maweni.
“We believe that logistics and transport companies cannot operate in isolation from society.
“By giving a helping hand to talented, capable students in need of financial assistance we provide them with a sustainable future and the industry with a continuous stream of qualified individuals,” Maweni said.
The donation is over a three- year period and is mainly for students from previously disadvantaged communities.
According to a recent report issued by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, half of the industry’s collective workforce has less than a Grade 12 certificate and less than 6 percent have obtained a tertiary education.
