On Friday 15 January the Grand West Market Hall came alive in true James Bond style as the Rachel’s Angels Trust hosted a gala ceremony to award all participating schools, mentors and mentees of the programme for their hard work over the 2008/9 period.

The mentorship programme, in conjunction with Stellenbosch University, aims to provide grade 11 and 12 learners with the opportunity to broaden their academic horizons as well as empower them with the life skills needed for their journey after school.

Learners from various schools in the Western Cape are assigned to senior students from the university to serve as their mentor over a two year period. Mentoring includes campus visits, attending lectures as well as taking part in a Market Day. During Market Day the different schools each have to submit a business plan for their very own small business, which they as a team then bring to life at the entrepreneurial event.

During Friday’s function the Best School, Best Mentor and Best Mentee was rewarded for their commitment to the Rachel’s Angels project and the extent to which they had harnessed the ideals of the programme as their own.

Bernadino Heights High School walked away with two of the three awards as they were awarded the Best School for 2008/9 and Chanelle Roelf, former learner of Bernadino Heights walked away with the Best Mentee for 2008/9 award. Bernadino Heights High School is located in Kraaifontein and was awarded the title due to their outstanding performance during the recent 2009 matric exams; 7 of the school’s angels achieved 16 distinctions collectively.

Chanelle Roelf was awarded for achieving a 83.6 % average with no less than 5 distintions during the 2009 matric examination.

Lee-Roy Simpson, a matie student, was awarded the Best Mentor award. He surpassed all expectations when he mentored two mentees over his two year period in the programme. Both of his mentees passed matric and one achieved a distinction. Lee-Roy himself achieved 5 distinctions at the university.
